About my book ”Just One Heart: A Cardiologist’s Guide to Healing, Health, and Happiness”

I took care of 20,000 other hearts before taking care of my own.

I spent decades trying to hide my anxiety, depression, and burnout: burnishing the image of a “perfect” student and a “perfect” doctor. That daily effort – hiding my struggles and pretending to be someone I am not – took its toll. So I began a personal quest to discover the roots of healing, health, and happiness. Along the way I noticed that my patients, colleagues, and countless others were eager to learn the timeless practices that helped me heal and thrive.

My name is Dr. Jonathan Fisher, and I am the author of Just One Heart: A Cardiologist’s Guide to Healing, Health, and Happiness. In this book, I share hard-earned lessons from my personal journey through loneliness, grief, and shame, and relate how learning to heal my own heart enabled me to heal others. The book is also a practical guide to the inner workings of the mind-heart connection, helping readers master their stress and develop a healthy and joyful heart.

You will discover how fear and anger can literally harm the heart, and how compassion and love can heal it. You’ll come to understand the current troubling state of our hearts, the root causes of heart disease, and the impact of our emotions on our heart health. You will learn how mindfulness, compassion, and the principles of positive psychology help strengthen and protect our hearts.

The book is written in Two Parts....

Part 1: State of the Heart explores the current state of our physical, emotional, social, and spiritual hearts. It describes the wisdom and meanings of the "just one heart" approach, the emerging science of the mind-heart connection, and the under-appreciated impact of stress and emotions on heart health.

Part 2: Seven Traits of the Heart lays out best practices for protecting the physical heart and delves into the seven timeless traits of the heart: Steadiness, Wisdom, Openness, Wholeness, Courage, Lightness, and Warmth. Each chapter provides real-world strategies, exercises, and tips for strengthening these qualities.

By reading Just One Heart, you will unlock the secrets of the mind-heart connection. As you strengthen the seven traits of your heart, you will find more health, joy, meaning, and connection in your own life and have the tools to help others do the same.
